Bernard and Jason teamed up on Datong Zoo. This new zoo is situated in the hills of Datong, Shanxi Province in north western China between a major mountain fed river, an abandoned aqueduct and a dry reservoir. With an arid climate which experiences extremely harsh winters, hot dry summers and little rainfall, the area could easily be classified as a desert. This notion was a springboard for the design initiatives for the regional zoological garden.

Our team created a series of desert environments for the zoo which emphases the safari style where visitors enclosed in a “train/jeep” gain a memorable experience.  In addition the scheme incorporates a walk-through aviaries, an amphitheatre to enjoy staged animal shows and a large open function lawn to cater to numerous festivals and events.
